At the beginning of October last year, the recently founded Young Professional Network in Luxembourg invited to another company visit. Together with the CFL Group (SOCIETE NATIONALE DES CHEMINS DE FER LUXEMBOURGOIS), the Luxembourgish counterpart to the German Federal Railways, respectively their subsidiary CFL multimodal, a visit of the Intermodalhub newly opened in July last year was held.

The project is one of the largest infrastructure projects realized in the Grand Duchy in recent years. After two and a half years of construction, the intermodal terminal is now ready to face the increasing challenge of modal transport and contribute to the promotion of combined transport in Europe. With its ideal geographic location and efficient train network, the new international hub will enable the consolidation of multimodal traffic flows within and outside Europe.

The actual terminal tour of the group of visitors was carried out in a coach, so the participants could be as realistic as possible to demonstrate all steps that a truck has to go through from the arrival in the terminal to the loading of a train wagon. Especially the modernity, such as optical or physical checks of the vehicles, but also the technical sophistication of the various processing steps impressed the participants. A great advantage of such an advanced terminal is undoubtedly the short turnaround time, as many processes, in contrast, could be automated and thus speeded up.

Another highlight of the transhipment facility is the applied loading technology on the wagons, which makes lateral loading possible by rotating a wagon undercarriage and thus, in contrast to other techniques, has proved to be enormously time-saving. Unfortunately, this is not yet widespread in Europe which also leads to the restriction of approaching terminals.

After the terminal tour the participants got an intensive insight into the strategy of the group of companies. In addition, topics such as corporate culture were discussed in detail about future activities and corporate development.
